5 Must-Visit Old Mission Peninsula Wineries

I recently fell in love with the Old Mission Peninsula wineries, and I can assure you, you won’t go thirsty here! Nestled in the heart of Northern Michigan, this charming peninsula is home to some of the best wineries Traverse City has to offer. The Old Mission Peninsula extends northward from Traverse City into the crystal clear waters of the Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan, ending at the lighthouse at Old Mission Point. The Peninsula is 19 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point, making it a cozy yet vibrant wine lover’s paradise.
Recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Old Mission Peninsula is known for its highly regarded Michigan wine. The climate here is moderated by the surrounding deep waters of the Grand Traverse Bay, which helps to prevent frost during the growing season and keeps the air temperatures milder during the winter months.

This parallel is shared by internationally recognized wine regions such as Bordeaux, France; Piedmont, Italy; and the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Cool climate varietals thrive in this region, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
With over 50 different wineries throughout the Traverse City region, a good chunk of them are found right here on the Old Mission Peninsula. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or just looking for a fun day out, winery hopping on the Old Mission Peninsula is hands down one of the best things to do in Traverse City. Let’s get into some of my favorite spots that made my trip unforgettable!
Awesome Old Mission Peninsula wineries
Bowers Harbor Vineyards
Bowers Harbor Vineyards is a gem among Old Mission Peninsula wineries, with a welcoming atmosphere that’s as inviting as it gets. This beautiful winery started back in 1991 and has grown from just 5 acres to over 20 acres of picturesque grapevines! Their journey began with a dream to craft wines that capture the unique spirit of Northern Michigan, and they’ve absolutely nailed it.
The outdoor seating here is perfect for soaking up the gorgeous views while enjoying a glass (or two) of wine. We couldn’t resist their flight options—just $12, which felt like such a bargain! I went for their Riesling flight, and Remi tried the ciders. Both were great, and had a variety of crisp flavors that kept us sipping happily.
This was the first stop for us on our winery tour, and it started the tour off strong! It’s truly a must-visit spot that showcases the charm and quality of Old Mission Peninsula wineries perfectly.
Brys Estate Vineyard and Winery
Brys Estate was hands down my favorite among the Old Mission Peninsula wineries! This stunning spot has it all—a secret garden with a lavender field, amazing views, phenomenal wine, and exceptional service. We loved it so much that it was the only winery we visited twice. Their Riesling/Gris is one of the best, lightest, and crispest white wines I’ve had in a long time, and I couldn’t resist buying two bottles for the road.
Our wine tasting experience was amazing, with the staff guiding us through their selections and even throwing in some bonus samples. On our second visit, we indulged in their chocolate wine pairing and absolutely loved it. And oh my gosh, I can’t forget about their frose! It was soooo delicious and perfect for a hot summer day. I honestly could’ve sipped here all day long—the atmosphere is just lovely.
They also have the Upper Deck, which sits elevated above the vineyard rows. This spot offers spectacular views of the 155-acre estate and East Grand Traverse Bay. It’s the perfect place to sip your wine and nibble on a delicious charcuterie board while soaking in the breathtaking scenery. It’s an absolute dream!
And of course, the Secret Garden is a magical addition, with over 6,000 lavender plants, a gift shop, picnic areas, a perennial flower garden, and perennial herbs. You can build a picnic with various prepared cheeses, cured meats, snacks, homemade lavender lemonade, freshly baked cookies, and cups of Moomers Ice Cream—one flavor made using lavender grown in the Secret Garden.
The garden is open seasonally from May through October.
Bonobo Winery
Bonobo Winery has pretty views, live music, the most amazing smoked whitefish dip, and of course, a fabulous wine selection! The name Bonobo comes from some of the world’s most social creatures, and the goal of Bonobo Winery is to be a social gathering place where people can kick back, relax, enjoy amazing wine, and soak in the scenery.
Founded by brothers and longtime Traverse City natives, Todd and Carter Oosterhouse, Bonobo Winery offers world-class wines in a rustic yet elegant atmosphere with breathtaking views. Their 25-acre vineyard consists of nine grape varieties, including Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Meunier, and Cabernet Franc.
Weather permitting, you can lounge outside on the large deck that overlooks the beautiful rolling vineyards with the bay peeking over in the distance, or cozy up inside next to the fireplace. Bonobo Winery is all about creating an ethereal experience that captivates all five senses, making it a must-visit spot on your Old Mission Peninsula wine tour!
2 Lads Winery
2 Lads Winery is all about being bold, modern, and true, and their wines truly capture the essence of their unique location. Nestled on 58 acres near the end of the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, this stunning 10,500-square-foot facility strikes the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. With a focus on gravity-flow and gentle handling techniques, they minimize disruptions to the delicate nuances of their wines, creating a sensory experience that’s truly extraordinary.
Their vineyards span 23 meticulously tended acres, specializing in cool-climate red wines, sparkling wines, and small-run white wines. Sustainability is at the heart of their operations, ensuring that every bottle reflects the integrity of the land.
When I visited, they crafted a flight that perfectly matched my wine preferences, and their charcuterie was top-notch. The unique building adds to the charm, making it a memorable stop! Whether you opt for wine by the glass, a $15 tasting of 3 wines, or a more robust $40 guided tasting experience, you’re in for a treat at 2 Lads Winery.
Chateau Chantal Winery and Inn
Last but certainly not least, Chateau Chantal Winery and Inn is another must! I loved switching things up here by trying out their cherry cider. The views here are seriously unbeatable, offering some of the best panoramas of the vineyards and East Grand Traverse Bay.
For just $14, you can enjoy a flight of 3 wines, a glass of wine, or even a wine slushie, and the tasting room has plenty of delicious snacks to complement your drink. Plus, their expansive East Terrace and charming West Patio (dog-friendly!) make for fantastic sipping spots.
The relaxed vibe makes it the perfect place to unwind. Be sure to keep an eye on their events calendar for fun seasonal events like Tapas Tours and Jazz at Sunset.
