Okay, so normally I’m more of a one or two tours kind of person when I travel, but when it came to tours in Mexico City, I ended up doing three—and honestly, I wish I had time to squeeze in more (though let’s be real, when I’m on a tight schedule, I start to get a little anxious).
I’m putting this post together to share the most highly recommended tours I was so glad we did, plus a few that my friends did and couldn’t stop hyping up—unfortunately, I just couldn’t fit them into our 4 days in Mexico City.
If you’ve got the time (and you’re not feeling too rushed), I definitely recommend checking these out! Depending on your travel style and budget, some might be more your vibe than others—but I promise, you won’t regret any of them!
Epic Tours in Mexico City
1. Hot Air Balloon Tour Over the Teotihuacán Pyramids
Alright, if you’re going to splurge on one tour in Mexico City, this should be it! The Hot Air Balloon Tour is the most expensive tour on this list, but wow, it’s totally worth it.
Not only do you get transportation to and from the site (so no stressing about how to get there), but the views over the Teotihuacan Pyramids at sunrise are unreal. You’ll feel like you’re floating over history—it’s one of those moments you just can’t describe until you see it!
After your balloon ride, you’re taken to La Cueva, a super cool restaurant inside a cave for breakfast. I had the chilaquiles, and OMG, they were so good! You also get traditional coffee and hibiscus water, so you’ll be totally fueled up for the next part of the tour: a cultural experience at the pyramids. It’s a packed, epic day, and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything!
You can check out the current pricing for the tour here or read my full review of our hot air balloon experience!
2. Lucha Libre
Alright, let’s talk Lucha Libre—I didn’t get the chance to squeeze this one in during our 4 days in Mexico City, but a couple of my friends went and could not stop raving about it. Even if wrestling isn’t your thing, this is one of the most iconic experiences in Mexico City. It’s not just about the match—it’s the energy, the over-the-top characters, the crowd yelling and laughing—such a fun cultural experience.
There are a few Lucha Libre tours in Mexico City that include Lucha Libre, and they’re definitely more than just a seat at the show. This slightly more budget-friendly tour includes a stop at a pulquería, a taste of pulque, live Latin music, a wrestler’s mask, and a local guide to walk you through everything.
Or there is this higher-rated option that is a little pricier but comes with dinner and drinks—think tacos, beer, and mezcal—and better seats.
Just a heads up, these shows only run on Tuesdays and Fridays through Sundays, so if this sounds like your vibe, make sure to plan accordingly!
3. Free Walking Tour
One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new city is join a free walking tour—and Mexico City has so many great ones to choose from! These are technically free, but they’re tip-based, so don’t forget to bring some cash and support your guide.
We went with the Highlights & Hidden Gems of Mexico City tour, and it was the perfect way to dive into the city’s rich history and culture. We explored the historic center, saw iconic spots like Zócalo and the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and our guide (who was amazing, by the way!) gave us so many details and stories we never would’ve known just walking around on our own.
After the pricier hot air balloon tour at the beginning of this list, this one helps balance out the budget—and it still delivers a super valuable experience. There are tons of other options too, like a Street Food Tour, a mural tour, one in Chapultepec, and even an Off the Beaten Tour that focuses on Frida Kahlo & Coyoacán. So many good ones to pick from!
4. Mexico City Food Tour
Let’s be real—Mexico City is a food lover’s dream, and doing a food tour is such a fun way to dive into all the flavors. You can read every blog out there (guilty), but nothing compares to being shown around by a local who knows the best spots and can give you the story behind what you’re eating.
If your vibe is casual and taco-focused, check out the 3-Hour Night Tacos and Mezcal Crawl. It’s more budget-friendly and zero fuss—just a fun night hopping around to some of the best taco spots in the city, sipping mezcal, and learning from a guide who knows their stuff. One of my girlfriends did this one and was obsessed.
If you want something a little more in-depth, the Historic Center Food Tour is 5 hours and gives you a full look at Mexico’s rich food scene—think a mix of street stalls, restaurants, a visit to an Aztec market, a stop in a classic cantina, and tastings of everything from snacks to sips.
It’s a great way to eat your way through the historic center and learn about the cultural roots behind the dishes. We did a similar one in Bogota and it totally turned me into a foodie tour girlie—I’m already adding this one to my list for next time!
5. Xochimilco Canal Boat Tour
Last but definitely not least—let’s talk about the Xochimilco Canal Boat Tour. This was such a fun and unique experience. The tour we picked included food and unlimited drinks (yes, unlimited), and we had the most fun guide ever—huge shoutout to Hugo for keeping the vibes immaculate.
It was kind of like a Mexican booze cruise, but with a cultural twist! You float along the colorful canals on a traditional trajinera, play Lotería (basically Mexican bingo), join in a Paloma and Michelada-making workshop, sip drinks, play games, and even sing your heart out with a little karaoke.
It’s super social—we went with friends but ended up bonding with everyone on the boat. And don’t be surprised if a mariachi band floats by playing music or if you want to buy souvenirs or snacks from the vendors on the water.
It’s a bit of a drive from Mexico City—about an hour with traffic—but honestly, it was so worth it. If you’re looking for something laid-back, festive, and very Mexico, this is such a fun one to add to your list. That said, if the party vibe isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other tours in Mexico City here that might be more your speed!
Which of these Mexico City tours are you checking out first?!
Adding a couple of tours in Mexico City to your itinerary is such a fun way to experience the city beyond just wandering on your own! Whether you’re into food, history, culture, or just want a good time with some new friends, there’s seriously something for everyone.
I hope this helped you find a few tours in Mexico City that feel like your vibe—let me know if you end up booking one!
