If you’re on the hunt for fun things to do in Key West, you’re in for a treat! This tropical paradise isn’t just a beachy escape—it’s a full-on experience packed with quirky charm, stunning sunsets, and unforgettable adventures.

It’s hands down one of my favorite weekend getaways from Tampa, whether I’m in the mood for exploring, relaxing, or celebrating. The best part is it doesn’t matter if you’re taking a family vacation, a romantic Keys getaway, an epic Florida spring break, or a bachelor/bachelorette party in Florida! Key West knows how to bring the energy while keeping the chill. So grab your sunnies and let’s dive into all the fun Key West has waiting for you!

Fun Things to Do in Key West on the Water

1. Go Snorkeling

Snorkeling is the perfect way to dive into the island’s underwater world! If you’re an early riser (or just really love breakfast and mimosas), the morning snorkel tour is calling your name! You’ll get breakfast, unlimited mimosas (or draft beer if you prefer), and a 3-hour tour to the 3rd largest living reef—all for less than $50! Talk about a deal!

Not a morning person? No problem! You can still get your snorkel on AND enjoy a stunning sunset at the same time. Combine your snorkel with a sunset cruise for a 3-hour tour that includes drinks, light apps, live music, and all the snorkeling gear you need. This is hands down one of the best snorkeling tours in Key West—just try to beat the views!

If you want a snorkel and boat tour that ensures you’ll see plenty of marine life including multiple different shark species, dolphins, sting rays, and more check out this tour with Key West Extreme Adventures.

2. Boat Tour

If getting into the water isn’t your vibe, there are plenty of other awesome boat tours to check out in Key West. Want something a little more private and chill? Rent a tiki boat! With room for just six people, this fun little ride lets you BYOB and cruise around with a friendly captain sharing the sights. It’s one of the best things to do in Key West if you just want to kick back and soak in the views.

If you’ve been following my posts, you know that’s also one of my favorite things to do in Clearwater Beach and downtown St. Pete!

3. Jet Ski or Parasail

If you’re in Key West, parasailing or jet skiing are musts! Parasailing gives you a relaxing aerial view of the island—perfect if you’re in the mood for something chill. On the other hand, if you’re craving some excitement, jet skiing is the way to go! In Key West, you have to book a tour to ride, but that means you get to see the best spots and have some free time to race around on your own.

My jet ski tour with Sunset Watersports was definitely one of the highlights of my trip and one of the most fun things to do in Key West. The guides were a blast, and you even get to ride tandem for no extra cost. The tour is about 1.5 hours and includes a stop at a sandbar to cool off.

If you want to do it all, Sunset Watersports has a “do it all” package that includes 12 activities, from jet skis to parasailing and even snorkeling—all for just $139.95! It’s the ultimate way to experience everything Key West watersports has to offer.

8. Hemingway Home and Museum

Even if you’re not a huge Hemingway fan, you absolutely can’t miss the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. This charming property is where the famous author wrote 70% of his work during his time in Key West. He owned this house for about 10 years, but after his death the property was transformed into a museum in 1964.

The house is filled with fascinating history, and of course, the real stars of the show are the famous six-toed cats that roam the grounds! Whether you’re a literary lover or just into quirky spots, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory allows you to walk through a lush, climate-controlled paradise with 60 different species of butterflies fluttering around you (and maybe even landing on you!). With over 20 species of exotic birds adding to the vibrant atmosphere, it’s a magical stop. Because this activity is in a climate-controlled, glass-enclosed habitat it makes it a great thing to do in Key West when it’s raining too!

13. Dry Tortugas

If you’re up for an adventure, one of the most unique things to do in Key West is Dry Tortugas! This stunning cluster of islands is all about secluded beaches, vibrant coral, and some of the best snorkeling around. Beyond its natural beauty, it’s home to Fort Jefferson, a massive historic structure on Garden Key. If a stunning lighthouse and sea turtles are more appealing be sure to check out Loggerhead Key.

Getting there is half the fun—whether you’re hopping on a ferry, taking a private boat, or flying in a seaplane, the journey is worth it! Just a heads-up, it’s a bit of a splurge and takes up a good chunk of your day, but trust me, it’s an unforgettable experience!

The cheapest option is this day tour which includes snorkeling equipment, round-trip ferry service, breakfast and lunch, as well as the park fee.

As the evening rolls in, the square bursts with energy—local food vendors, street performers, and arts and crafts displays create the perfect setting for a magical sunset. 15. Southernmost Point

A stop at the Southernmost Point Buoy is a must in Key West! This concrete marker signifies the southernmost point of the mainland U.S. (and the lowest latitude of the contiguous states). It’s one of the most iconic and photographed spots in the country, so be sure to snap a pic—just be prepared for a line, usually even if you go early!

16. Get Key Lime Pie from Kermit’s

If you’re like me and weren’t totally sold on key lime pie before visiting Key West, Kermit’s will change that for you! Their pie is a slice of heaven! And if you’re feeling adventurous, go for their chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick—it’s a game-changer!

Luckily I waited until my last day to experience this, otherwise, it would’ve been a problem.

17. Duval Crawl

Key West’s bar scene is legendary, and there’s no better way to experience it than with a Duval Crawl! From live music to craft cocktails and dancing, you’ll find a spot that matches your vibe. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Hog’s Breath
  • Captain Tony’s
  • The Smallest Bar
  • Tiki House
  • General Horseplay
  • Sloppy Joe’s
  • Whistle Bar and Garden of Eden
  • Durty Harry’s and Rick’s (end your night here—trust me, it’s perfect for dancing!)

Check out my TikTok for clips from each bar and some drink recommendations!

18. Check out a Local Coffee Shop

Cuban Coffee Queen is a must every time I visit Key West! This iconic spot serves authentic Cuban eats and coffee that hits the spot, whether you’re craving your caffeine fix or a hearty meal. Their sandwiches? MASSIVE and downright drool-worthy.

As someone who usually sticks with a classic Cuban, I decided to switch things up on my last visit and went for the Caliente Cuban Mix and it brought the heat and flavor. If you’re into a spicy kick, this is your sandwich soulmate!

For another amazing coffee stop, check out The Koffie House! This charming little gem won me over with its seriously amazing coffee, cozy atmosphere, and the kindest staff you’ll ever meet.

Not only is the coffee brewed to perfection (I’m talking smooth, rich, and oh-so-satisfying), but the ambiance is peak Key West vibes. Think cute decor, a welcoming feel, and the kind of place where you want to sit and stay a while.

19. Drink at the Southernmost Brewery

History and hops? Yes, please! First Flight Brewery is where the very first American International flight ticket was purchased back in 1927—how cool is that? This aviation-themed spot is also the southernmost brewery in the U.S., with a gorgeous canopy garden that makes your dining experience feel like a tropical escape.

Their menu is all about fresh, locally sourced American fare, and their beers are delish. Pro tip: swing by during their unbeatable happy hour, where you can snag $3.50 pints and discounted bites.

Must-Visit Restaurants in Key West

Conch Republic

Conch Republic has drinks that are a total vacation mood, from vibrant mojitos to strong pina coladas! But let me tell you—their royal reds peel-and-eat shrimp are the stars of the show (don’t worry, they’ve got ’em even though it’s not on the menu!).

These shrimp are delicate and oh-so-sweet, and once you’ve had them, you’ll never look at regular shrimp the same again! (Tampa Bay locals, if you’re craving royal reds, Crabby’s Dockside in Clearwater Beach has ‘em too.)

Plus, the marina setting makes this a super convenient spot before or after your adventures!

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven is Key West’s quirky, whimsical gem! The second you walk in, you’ll see why this place is a must-visit. From funky chickens running around to the colorful decor, it’s a vibe.

For brunch, I went with the lobster benedict—and wow was I happy I did! The menu has so many tempting options, but trust me, you’ll want to save room for their key lime pie with sky-high meringue—it’s a must!

Salute! on the Beach

If you’re craving a laid-back beach vibe, Salute! on the Beach is the place. Located on Higgs Beach, this sister restaurant to Blue Heaven is all about fresh Italian and Mediterranean flavors. Whether you’re stopping by for lunch or enjoying a relaxed dinner after a day at the beach, the incredible ocean views and open-air atmosphere make it a perfect spot to unwind. Plus, with over 2,000 4- and 5-star ratings, you know it’s a hit!

El Meson de Pepe

Just steps from Mallory Square, El Meson de Pepe serves up a taste of Cuba in the heart of Key West. Their tostones and yucca are so good! Pair them with a fresh grouper dish, and you’ve got the perfect combo of Cuban flair and Key West seafood.

BONUS TIP: If you’ve been hopping from bar to bar, hit up Boat House for their insane happy hour! From 4–7 PM, everything is half-off—including filet tips, fried lobster tail, peel-and-eat shrimp, and glasses of wine. My bill for all of that? $33. Not mind-blowing cuisine, but it totally hits the spot after a boozy day!

FAQ Key West Questions

When is the best time to visit Key West?

Key West palm trees on a sunny day

If you’re planning your getaway, aim for March through May—it’s hands down the sweet spot! You’ll dodge the summer’s scorching heat and Florida’s winter crowds (and sky-high hotel rates). Plus, the water is absolute perfection for snorkeling, swimming, and all your tropical daydreams.

Key West’s rainy season runs May through October, with hurricane season peeking in June through November. If you visit during this time, don’t worry—you’ll still catch some sunny moments in between those quick, dramatic thunderstorms.

What is the best way to get to Key West?

Allegiant planes boarding for Key West

There are three main ways to reach this slice of paradise: drive, ferry, or fly. Let’s break it down:
🚗 Driving: If you’re road-tripping through the Florida Keys, go for it (and don’t forget to pack with my road trip checklist!). But if Key West is your only stop, driving may not be worth the hassle—parking can be tricky, though most hotels I recommend include free parking.
Ferry: The Key West Express departs from Fort Myers and Marco Island, taking about 3.5 hours to get there. Tickets are $172 round trip (or $142-$152 if you book 8+ days ahead). I’ve tried it—it’s a decent option but not my favorite. Flying is usually faster and often more cost-effective!
✈️ Flying: This is my go-to! Look for affordable flights with Allegiant, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Delta, or United, depending on your starting city. A quick flight gets you to paradise in no time, and it’s so much more convenient.

Where to Stay in Key West

Key West may be tiny, but it’s packed with plenty of cozy, charming, and fabulous places to stay. (Pro tip: book early! These spots fill up fast, and the earlier you book, the better the rates!) Here are a few options I love:

  • La Concha Key WestOutdoor pool + pool bar? Yes, please! Modern, spacious rooms (with equally nice bathrooms!) FREE parking. Best part? It’s right on Duval Street, making it perfect for all the fun.
  • Douglas House—Adults-only inn, perfect for a romantic escape. Just a 5-minute stroll to the beach and 2 minutes from the Ernest Hemingway Home. Features a shared outdoor pool, free parking, and—it gets better—pet-friendly vibes!
  • Andrews Inn and Garden CottagesTucked just off Duval Street with incredible charm. Free hot breakfast to start your day off right. Complimentary poolside happy hour (cheers to that!). Bonus: another Key West hotel with free parking if you’re driving.
