Japan Packing List

The Essentials

  • Passport and travel docs: The obvious one, but double-check you have these before you leave! A photocopy or photo on your phone can also be helpful. Also, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates!
  • Visa: At the time of this post US citizens do not need a visa for visits up to 3 months, but you can check here to double-check.
  • eSIM: Staying connected in Japan is a must for navigating, and transportation schedules. Luckily, eSIMs are super easy to set up in advance!
  • Suica Card: This was a game-changer! You can get a physical Suica Card from any train station or add it to your Apple Wallet. It works for public transportation, convenience stores, and even some restaurants. For more tips on using the Suica Card and other travel essentials, check out my things to know before traveling to Japan to help you navigate like a pro!

  • Portable charger: Don’t let your phone die while snapping pics of shrines or navigating the subway. A portable charger is key for long sightseeing days.
  • Travel insurance: Highly recommended for any international trip. Check out the pricing for your specific trip below.
  • Credit cards and some cash: Not all places accept credit cards, so it’s good to have some cash on hand. If possible bring your credit card that has no foreign transaction fees.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Trust me, you’ll be walking a lot in Japan. Whether you’re exploring temples or strolling through Harajuku, a solid pair of comfy sneakers or walking shoes is a must. I got these Dr. Scholl’s sneakers right before the trip and used the heck out of them! They were comfortable and looked cute with dresses, light pants, and just about every outfit I packed!

Toiletries + Health

  • Mini first-aid kit: I always bring a few essentials—band-aids, ibuprofen, motion sickness pills (for all those trains!). Better safe than sorry.
  • Sunscreen: Even during cooler months, the sun in Japan can be surprisingly strong, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. It’s important to pack sunscreen for your trip, but if you want to travel light, don’t worry—Japan has some great options you can easily pick up when you’re there!
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste: enough said.
  • Shampoo and conditioner: I skipped this because I knew I could get quality products there, but I just ended up using what was in the hotel.
  • Skincare products: Asia is known for its skincare, so you might want to leave some room to bring back new products!
  • Feminine hygiene products

Tech + Gadgets

  • Smartphone and charger: Like I mentioned, I packed this portable charger for the trip which came in handy pretty much every day!
  • Camera and extra batteriesThis is the camera I use!
  • Laptop or tablet: If you plan to work or watch movies during your travels.
  • Headphones: Noise-canceling headphones can be a lifesaver on long flights.

Travel Accessories

  • Personal item bag: This bag has been a game-changer for my trips. It’s spacious, organized, and fits all my essentials!
  • Unisex crossbody bag: Perfect for carrying your daily necessities while you travel. I have this Lululemon dupe bag in multiple colors and it’s my go-to travel bag!
  • Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated!
  • Travel pillow and eye mask: For comfort on long flights or train rides. The one I linked was perfect for a long flight! It’s one you inflate and sit in front of you to lean on. It inflates and deflates very easily. I recommend opening it before your trip and letting it air out because, on my first use it did smell strongly of plastic.

Seasonal Packing Tips

Summer (June-August):

  • Light, breathable clothing: Japan’s summer can be hot and humid (honestly their humidity is nothing compared to what I’m used to in Florida). Pack lightweight, comfy clothes—you’ll thank me later! Check out some of my favorite light, breathable options here.
  • UV umbrella: This is one of Japan’s genius inventions! You can find UV umbrellas everywhere. They’re not just for rain but to shield you from the strong summer sun. Don’t worry about packing an umbrella, some hotels have them for your use, and even if not you can find them very cheap.
  • Raincoat: I ended up mostly using umbrellas, but when traveling made it difficult to carry luggage and an umbrella I was happy to have this lightweight raincoat!
  • Sandals: If you’re going in warmer months a good pair of sandals can be a great extra shoe. I got these Madden Girl sandals in black and tan before the trip, but I just took the tan ones. I’m obsessed with them!

Winter (December-February):

  • Warm layers: Japan’s winters can be chilly, especially in cities like Kyoto. Layer up with sweaters, jackets, and scarves for those colder days.
  • Thermal leggings: If you’re visiting during the winter months, thermal leggings are a lifesaver. You can wear them under jeans to keep you warm without feeling bulky.
  • Heat packs: These are available at every convenience store in Japan. Just pop one in your pocket or shoes to keep warm while exploring outdoors.

Final thoughts for your Japan packing list

One of my favorite packing hacks is starting with a small, inexpensive carry-on suitcase and then, midway through my trip, finding a larger suitcase at a local market for just $35! This worked perfectly for me because I don’t mind taking a checked bag home but hate arriving with one.

If you plan on flying around or taking trains and buses, this might not be the best option, but it can be a lifesaver for those who prefer to travel light initially. Additionally, packing cubes are great for keeping your belongings organized and maximizing space. Japan has amazing shopping opportunities, from beauty products to fashion, so make sure to leave some space in your luggage for souvenirs.

And there you have it—your ultimate Japan packing list! Whether you’re navigating Tokyo’s bustling streets, hiking through serene bamboo forests, or indulging in some fluffy pancakes in Harajuku, you’re all set to do it in style and comfort. I know packing can feel overwhelming, but trust me, with these essentials in your bag, you’ll be ready for anything Japan throws your way!
