Los Angeles to Joshua Tree Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at LAX and Drive to Palm Springs

Touch down at LAX, pick up your rental car (check prices here for the best deals!), and hit the road. The drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs is about 110 miles and takes around 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to soak in the shift from LA’s bustling city vibes to the laid-back, sun-soaked charm of Palm Springs.

In-n-Out Pit Stop

No road trip through California is complete without a pit stop at In-N-Out Burger. Even as someone who’s not usually a burger person, there’s something about their sauce that just hits differently. It’s quick, affordable, and ridiculously good—what’s not to love? You’ll pass a few along the way, so you can time your stop perfectly depending on when hunger strikes.

Palm Springs

We rolled into Palm Springs just as the sun was setting, painting the desert sky in warm, golden hues. Depending on when you arrive, you’ve got two solid options: dive into the lively Palm Springs nightlife or recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.

We decided to lean into the evening vibes, starting with some thrift shopping at Revivals. It’s the perfect spot to snag unique finds—I scored some amazing men’s leather jackets that ended up being my go-to looks for the entire trip!

For dinner, Azúcar is non-negotiable. The food was absolutely incredible, the service was top-notch, and their mocktails were just as impressive as the rest of the experience. Total win!

Day 2: Exploring Palm Springs

Kick off your day in Palm Springs by starting with an early morning hike. We did the Andreas Canyon Palm Springs Trail. This trail is adorned with the unique beauty of indigenous flora and promises a serene start to your day!

Afterward, refuel at 4 Paws Coffee Co., a cozy spot with great vibes, artisanal coffee, and some seriously tasty breakfast sandwiches. Perfect for a post-hike treat!

Next, wander through Downtown Palm Springs. Stroll past quirky shops, charming cafes, and don’t miss the larger-than-life Forever Marilyn statue—a nod to Hollywood’s golden days that’s worth a photo.

For a jaw-dropping view, hop on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The rotating tram takes you up the mountains, giving you a stunning panorama of the desert below. It’s one of those experiences you can’t miss!

As the sun sets, try your luck at one of Palm Springs’ casinos. Whether you’re there to win big or just soak up the energy, it’s a fun way to wrap up a day full of adventure. Then, head back to rest up—you’ll want to be ready for whatever tomorrow has in store!

Where to Stay in Palm Springs

Palm Springs has no shortage of cool places to stay, each reflecting the city’s unique vibe. Whether you’re drawn to the modern, upscale feel of the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel or the colorful, retro charm of The Saguaro Hotel, there’s a spot to match your style and budget. Wherever you land, you’ll have the perfect base to recharge for more desert adventures.

We stayed at The Saguaro Hotel and enjoyed it! The location, price, and vibe were all great.

Day 3: Exploring Joshua Tree

Wake up and grab a coffee from Cartel Roasting Co. before hitting the road and heading from Palm Springs to Joshua Tree. Notice as you go from the laid-back charm of Palm Springs to the rugged allure of Joshua Tree National Park.

Before going into Joshua Tree National Park make sure you make a stop at the World Famous Crochet Museum, a quirky (and free) Joshua Tree activity that gives a look into how unique this little town is.

Fuel your Joshua Tree adventure by grabbing a sandwich from the Grab-n-Go at the Visitor Center. While there, seek advice from park rangers and consider getting an America the Beautiful Pass if you haven’t already (this pass grants free access to all national parks for a year). Once you have your essentials, including a map because cell service is limited, venture into the park.

If you’re tackling Joshua Tree in a single day, stick to easy yet stunning hikes like Barker Dam, Hidden Valley, Skull Rock, and Arch Rock. Each trail takes about an hour or less and offers its own unique landscapes and features, making them perfect for a quick but rewarding adventure.

For a magical touch, plan to visit the Cholla Cactus Garden at sunrise or sunset (weather permitting). It’s an incredible spot, though we had to skip it due to high winds and chilly temps—but it’s still high on my list for next time!

After a day of exploring, wrap things up with a meal at Royal Siam Cuisine Thai Restaurant. Their authentic dishes are the perfect way to recharge and end your Joshua Tree adventure on a delicious note.

Where to Stay in Joshua Tree

From quirky retreats to cozy hideaways, there are some really unique and awesome accommodation options in Joshua Tree. The town is great if you’re seeking eclectic vacation rentals, each with its own character and charm.

We loved our rental which was right in town and offered great amenities such as a cowboy pool, jacuzzi, and sauna. It was this 2-bedroom home that provided us with the nice bonus of enjoying our own space.

Not to mention the sauna was a perfect retreat after a day of hiking!

Day 4-7 Return to LA to Explore the City of Dreams

Joshua Tree Morning

Start your morning with a perfectly brewed coffee from Joshua Tree Coffee Co. Right next door, swing by JT Country Kitchen for breakfast. With its cozy, down-to-earth vibe and portions that don’t mess around, it’s the perfect spot to fuel up before hitting the road and heading from Joshua Tree to LA.

Whether you go for the hearty breakfast burrito or the stack of fluffy, picture-perfect pancakes, you’ll leave ready to take on whatever the day has in store!

Arriving in LA

Returning to the hustle and energy of LA after the peaceful stillness of the desert creates such a fun contrast. I personally loved kicking off the trip with the calm and quiet of Joshua Tree and then diving back into the vibrant buzz of the city—it’s the perfect balance!

Three days in LA barely scratch the surface of what this sprawling city has to offer, but if your visit is anything like mine, it’ll leave you excited to come back and explore even more.

From the laid-back beaches of Venice and Santa Monica to the star-studded streets of Beverly Hills and Hollywood, every neighborhood has its own vibe, adding a unique layer to your LA experience.

Santa Monica Beach

LA Neighborhoods

Exploring the heart of Hollywood was like stepping into a movie. From the iconic Walk of Fame to the Warner Bros. Studio and the Hollywood Sign, the whole area is a cinematic dream. Beverly Hills, with its stunning mansions and high-end boutiques on Rodeo Drive, gave us a peek into the city’s glitzy lifestyle.

As the sun dipped behind the Hollywood Hills, a visit to Griffith Observatory gave an unforgettable view of the city’s sparkling skyline, giving the day a magical, almost celestial vibe. If you’re in the mood for some nightlife, West Hollywood’s buzzing spots like Sur and TomTom will definitely keep the excitement going.

If you’re feeling adventurous, dedicate an afternoon to downtown LA. The Broad, Little Tokyo, and Chinatown offer a mix of culture, while Grand Central Market brings the energy. And book lovers, check out The Last Bookstore for some artsy charm or the quirky Museum of Death for something a bit offbeat!

Honestly, the options are endless!

Exploring LA’s iconic beaches is an absolute must, and we dedicated a whole day to the sun-soaked shores of Venice Beach and Santa Monica, which are right next to each other.

Venice Beach has a cool, laid-back vibe, while Santa Monica—especially the pier at sunset—was straight-up breathtaking. The picturesque canals and lively atmosphere made it a day we’ll never forget!

LA Traffic and Parking

As for LA traffic, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, though we did hit some slower spots during peak hours. Fortunately, parking never seemed to be an issue, which also came as a pleasant surprise. We did visit in the winter (January), so that could have played a role.

We tried to be strategic with our itinerary, sticking to one neighborhood at a time so we could park, wander, and easily hop to the next spot without worrying about moving the car.

Where to Stay in LA

When it comes to where to stay, try to match your accommodation to the areas you plan on exploring. I stayed in Koreatown, which was super central and had tons of great food options. But honestly, I kind of wished I had stayed closer to the action of our main activities.

If you’re all about the glam and nightlife, West Hollywood is calling your name with its iconic spots and buzzing energy. For a more relaxed, beachy vibe, Santa Monica or Venice Beach is where it’s at. Each neighborhood brings its own charm, so pick the one that fits your style for a smoother, more enjoyable stay!

How far is Joshua Tree from LA?

Joshua Tree National Park is located approximately 130 miles east of Los Angeles. The drive typically takes around 2.5 hours, making it an easily accessible and very worthwhile day trip from LA! This road trip itinerary does take a detour through Palm Springs, but the itinerary can easily be adjusted to remove this stop or to add it in after a day in Joshua Tree.

Try to hit the road early to avoid rush hour and allow yourself to take in the scenic drive back to LA.

When is the best time for a Los Angeles to Joshua Tree road trip?

The best time for an LA to Joshua Tree road trip really depends on what kind of experience you’re after. Spring and fall are great for mild temperatures, making outdoor activities comfortable and enjoyable. Summer, while scorching, allows you to witness the desert’s intense beauty—but be ready for some seriously hot weather.

Winter, though cooler, brings a peaceful vibe with fewer crowds, and that’s when we took our trip. Honestly, I really enjoyed it! The only thing I would’ve liked was a bit warmer weather in the evenings after the sun set, but other than that, no complaints at all. If you’re looking for a quieter, more tranquil experience, winter is a solid choice!

Los Angeles to Joshua Tree Road Trip Tips

  • Plan Fuel Stops: Make sure you’re conscious of fuel levels when exploring. Fill up before entering Joshua Tree National Park if need be, and fill up before entering LA where gas prices may be more expensive.
  • Sun Protection: Whether it’s winter or summer, sun protection is a must. Pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Water Essentials: Stay hydrated. Bring more water than you think you’ll need, especially during warmer months.
  • Entrance Fee/America the Beautiful Pass: Joshua Tree requires an entrance fee of $30 per vehicle, but you can opt for the America the Beautiful Pass, a cost-effective annual pass that provides free access to all national parks for $80.
  • Respect Nature: When hiking, stay on designated trails, follow Leave No Trace principles, and respect the delicate desert ecosystem. Avoid touching or climbing on rock formations.
  • Navigating Attractions: When visiting Palm Springs especially, we noticed some online information may not be up-to-date. During our visit, we encountered a few changes, like the absence of the Desert X art installation. Keep an open mind and be prepared for unexpected surprises or modifications to your planned itinerary.
