Kyoto is a city that has it all— and where you stay in Kyoto can really shape your experience, whether you’re diving into its rich cultural history or enjoying the modern side of the city.
With limited time, staying in one of the city’s most convenient locations is key. For example, during our 2 days in Kyoto, we stayed near Kyoto Station, which made exploring super easy. But if I had more time, I would have loved to immerse myself in the historic vibe of the Southern Higashiyama area. In this guide, I’ll break down the top 5 areas to stay in Kyoto—covering the pros and cons of each and providing some hotel recommendations to help you pick the perfect spot for your trip!
Where to Stay in Kyoto
1. Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station is one of the most convenient and bustling areas to stay in, especially if you’re short on time and need quick access to transportation. Known as the central hub for trains, buses, and subways, it’s the best area to stay in Kyoto if you plan to take day trips or explore various parts of the city. Kyoto Station is also home to modern shopping centers, restaurants, and even a department store, making it a lively and well-connected area in Kyoto.
Pros:
- Easy access to transportation, including Shinkansen (bullet trains)
- Lots of modern amenities like shopping malls, food courts, and convenience stores
- Perfect for short stays when you want to maximize time and convenience
Cons:
- Lacks the traditional, historic Kyoto vibe
- Can feel a bit too urban and commercial compared to other areas
- Not as many cultural landmarks within immediate walking distance
Hotel Recommendations:
- Budget option: Via Inn Prime Kyotoeki Hachijoguchi — This hotel in Kyoto has cozy rooms at a very affordable rate. Plus, its proximity to Kyoto Station means you can hop on a train or grab a quick bite without any hassle!
- Mid-range option: Hotel Vischio Kyoto by GRANVIA — Our favorite hotel from the trip! We absolutely loved our stay here. The spacious rooms provide amazing value for the price, and the location can’t be beat! Plus, you’ll find a relaxing onsen right at the hotel, making it a perfect place to unwind after exploring the city.
- Luxury option: Hotel Granvia Kyoto — For those looking to splurge, Hotel Granvia Kyoto is where it’s at! Directly connected to Kyoto Station, this chic hotel features an indoor swimming pool, stylish decor, and both a steam room and hot tub.
2. Downtown Kyoto
Downtown Kyoto is where tradition meets modernity, making it one of the most exciting places to stay in Kyoto. This area is known for its vibrant atmosphere and is packed with shopping streets, restaurants, and bars while still being within walking distance of some of Kyoto’s most iconic temples and shrines.
If you enjoy having lively nightlife options but also want to experience a bit of Kyoto’s cultural side, downtown Kyoto might be the best area for you.
Pros:
- Close to shopping districts like Shijo and Kawaramachi
- Great for foodies, with lots of restaurants, cafes, and bars
- Walking distance to key attractions like Nishiki Market and Pontocho Alley and even the Southern Higashiyama and Northern Higashiyama areas
Cons:
- Can be crowded and noisy, especially during the evenings
- Hotels here may be pricier than other areas
- Doesn’t offer as much of the “traditional Kyoto” feel as other neighborhoods

- Luxury option: The Ritz Carlton Kyoto — If you’re ready to indulge, The Ritz Carlton Kyoto is a must! Nestled along the banks of the Kamo River, this 5-star gem offers an indoor heated pool, exquisite dining, and the chance to enjoy afternoon tea in a stunning lobby. It’s luxury and tranquility wrapped into one, plus you’re just a short stroll from some of Kyoto’s top attractions!

Northern Higashiyama is where you’ll find some of Kyoto’s most famous cultural landmarks, like the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), Nanzen-ji, and the Philosopher’s Path. This area is perfect if you are looking to immerse yourself in Kyoto’s historical and tranquil side.

The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring! Another option that is right in the heart of Southern Higashiyama.

For our short trip, staying near Kyoto Station was a game-changer—we loved how easy it was to get around! But honestly, if we had more time, I’d be all over staying in the Higashiyama district to soak up those stunning historic vibes.
